The film "Miller's Girl" presents an intriguing concept by exploring a controversial relationship between a mature teenager and her intellectually challenged teacher. This premise has the potential to delve into power dynamics in the post-#MeToo era. However, the movie fails to live up to its initial appeal. Jade Halley Bartlett's debut feature is filled with Southern gothic style, evident from the beginning as Jenna Ortega delivers a dreamy and self-aware narration that leaves nothing to the imagination. Ortega's character, Cairo Sweet, describes herself as an ordinary 18-year-old, despite her name suggesting otherwise. She finds solace in literature during her moments of solitude. Cairo, a wealthy teenager, lives alone in her family's Tennessee mansion while her globe-trotting lawyer parents are frequently absent. She spends her time idling, smoking, and scheming with her best friend, Winnie, played by the playful and wisecracking Gideon Adlon. Cairo embodies the captivating image of a restless young individual, seductively wandering through misty forests in knee-high socks and miniskirts. However, whether out of boredom, a desire for a father figure, or a combination of both, Cairo engages in an ill-advised flirtation with her high school creative writing instructor, Jonathan Miller, portrayed by Martin Freeman. This familiar narrative of a young teacher becoming the object of schoolgirl fantasies takes an uncomfortable turn due to the significant age difference between Cairo and the middle-aged Miller, who could be her father. Miller, a failed author turned teacher, is constantly reminded of his career choice by his wife, Beatrice, portrayed by Dagmara Dominczyk, who adds a saucy and flamboyant touch to her character. Yet, Cairo's speech matches her beauty and immense talent with a sharpness. The heightened exchanges between her and Jonathan initially possess an undeniable allure, a sense of wrongness that is difficult to resist. Each of them believes that the other truly understands.
