The 1982 novel by Alice Walker, "The Colour Purple," has been the subject of numerous popular adaptations over the years, including the Broadway musical that debuted in 2005 and the Oscar-nominated film directed by Steven Spielberg. The latest video from Blitz Bazawule structures a magnificent hybrid that blends the emotive musings of writing with the tremendous fury of musical performance, capturing the greatest elements of each divergent medium.

The story of Celie, played by Fantasia Barrino in her adult role and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi in her youth, is told in "The Colour Purple." When Celie was younger, she played around on the beach with her sister Nettie, singing and talking. Only when they are by themselves can they truly lose themselves in the games of girlhood. Their lives are controlled by their violent father, who lives at home. Celie, who is expecting her second child, must first endure her father selling her babies and then suffer the same disrespect from her father, who then auctions her off to Mister. With Mister, she finds a transition from one abusive environment to another rather than a means of escape.

After Nettie disappears, the sisters lose touch, and Celie is left to struggle through the depressing decades ahead of her alone without a sister, a dependable family, or children. Shug Avery, a "fast and loose" blues singer who never remains in one spot for too long, is the woman her abusive husband is in love with. Celie's main comfort comes from the far-off hope that her sister and kids are still alive someplace, as well as from Shug and her feisty, independent daughter-in-law Sofia.

The success of "The Colour Purple" is largely due to the performances in it. Both Mpasi and Barrino, who are making their feature film debuts, do a fantastic job portraying Celie, capturing both her resentful perseverance and her contemplative, cautious nature. Mpasi in particular is incredibly captivating; her mesmerising grin and compelling, silent expressions give off chills. The link between her and Bailey is so authentically portrayed that even though Nettie isn't in the movie, the alienation at its core is still poignant. Their chemistry is spot on.
