It Lives Inside, A Story Of Samidha - A True Review

Director Bishal Dutta's tautly told tale of demonic interference, which presents a distinct face to horror in the shape of the American Hindi experience, is a competent and atmospheric film that flirts with achieving something different in the genre but ultimately holds back.

Samidha, the protagonist of Suri, is a teen who is struggling to adjust to high school life and is starting to hate her culture and family. When Tamira says there's a monster in a jar, Samidha isolates herself from her former best friend and finds herself irresistibly lured back into her world.

Samidha mocks her closest friend, breaks the jar, and unintentionally releases the Pishach demon, which hooks onto her, in a moment that is reminiscent of Carrie's cruelty.

While Dutta keeps the action tight, there are times when it seems like the picture is holding back or that budgetary restrictions have prevented it from amplifying some of the more unsettling components for the conclusion. This is a coming-of-age story wrapped up in the trappings of a culture clash.

As a result, even though they are adequately conveyed on screen, some of the shocks come out as repetitive and quite familiar.

It Lives Inside may have started out as a statement on what it's like to be an outsider and to adapt to American culture, but in the end, despite having a strong and likeable lead, it ends up sliding into the usual horror tropes.

It Lives Inside delivers enough jolts and offers a unique perspective on the typical coming-of-age fare glimpsed within the genre, but there's a distinct feeling that outside of a sensationally well-crafted finale, the film could have taken a few more risks to end up more memorable and less pedantic. There's enough tension where it needs to be, and it's clear that the allegory of the American journey and the internalized culture clash is there for all to see.

The Pishacha, a Hindu myth about an evil, flesh-eating beast that thrives on negative energy and devours people's souls, serves as the main inspiration for the narrative. Its appearance is initially limited to artwork that features gruesome depictions of terror and death. Its silhouette can then be seen in reflections, along with glimpses of its odd form up close and in dim corners. It keeps the tortured characters on edge and the spectator on guard because its presence is felt before it is truly shown. They only make passing references to its roots, and there are many questions about both its strengths and flaws. Nevertheless, the decision by the director to drag out the big reveal succeeds since it heightens the tension far more than if the viewer could see the Pishacha following its next victim.
