Fast, funny and absolutely honest: "Blue Beetle" stands out from the increasingly dense world of superhero films. Running at just over two hours, the pace is fast enough to never exceed expectations, and while it's not entirely unexpected, the story of Jaime Reyes and the sentient alien scarab that symbiotically accompanies him doesn't become an eyesore . Since he deeply sympathizes with his group, the origin story is cliche. It's certainly packed with exciting action, but the family ties at the heart of the film is where Blue Beetle transcends the ins and outs of its genre. Xolo Maridueña conveys a wonderfully refreshing performance as Jaime. The Cobra Kai alumnus brings a kind of sweet silliness to the character, imbued with the fear and insecurity of someone as they see their family and their entire community confronting the ravages of gentrification. A clear demarcation between the "haves" and the "have-nots" is quickly established by Palmera City's gleaming spiers, which overlook neighborhoods from which people are increasingly excluded.

The tragedy of Jaime's backstory lies not in a single devastating loss or unhappy personal life, but in the continued failures of the economic system in which he worked tirelessly to excel. Written by Gareth Dunnett-Alcoser, the screenplay critiques the so-called "American Dream" as Jaime triumphantly returns with a college degree and hopes of social mobility for his family, but is forced to leave clean-tech CEO Victoria's mansion work by piecework.

  

This commentary on class features a hilarious super-powered adventure, complete with an iconic suit designed by Mayes C. Rubio. It's great, sort of walking a very fine line between technical and organic, and its accuracy to the comics is sure to please Blue Beetle fans. Our glimpses into the suits of former Beatles Dan Garrett and Ted Kord perfectly portray the campy heroes of the 20th century without being ridiculous. Also the famous beetle ship is said to be fully functional and practically built, as is the silliness of previous incarnations of the Blue Beetle.

  

The thing is: Jaime has forever been unique in relation to his ancestors. He can unleash the Scarab's full power when it is attached to his spine. Garrett and Kord exclusively wore Technicolor costumes to become their alter egos. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Jaime's first transformation into Blue Beetle is truly terrifying. Mariduena manages to express the pain of their merging as the smart suit drags her through the house.

The Reyes family's screams are played for laughter, but there's a deep disgust in their reaction - at one point the transformation is likened to demonic possession. It's moments like these that remind audiences that Jaime really is just a regular boy who wants the best for his family.
